How to Survive an International Flight
Long international flights can often drain your energy before your trip has even started. Since I just flew from Chicago to Florence, here are a few of the ways I stay refreshed and arrive ready to go after a long international flight.
-
Comfort is Key
For some people comfort means a tee shirt and sweats. Personally, I prefer jeans and a casual shirt. No matter which direction you go, it is helpful to avoid wearing shorts, as planes are usually cool, even in the middle of summer. I also recommend bringing a sweater you can use it to keep warm or as a pillow. Most importantly, wear practical shoes— a gym shoe or sneaker is perfect.
-
Leave Well Rested
The days leading up to an international flight are usually filled with excitement, last minute packing, and trip planning, which make sleep hard to come by. However, the more well rested you are before your trip, the better you will feel upon your arrival.
-
Pack a Snack
Unless you happen to love airplane food (I certainly don’t) it is a good idea to bring something to munch on for when you get hungry. Whatever you pack should be healthy and something that won’t upset your stomach. No one wants a stomach ache when they are stuck on a plane for hours.
-
Bring Things To Do
A long-haul flight can result in extreme boredom, especially if you have trouble sleeping on planes. The best way to combat this is to pack a book, magazines, your laptop, crossword puzzles—whatever is lightweight and will keep your interest. Just beware that many planes and even some airports don’t have readily available plugs, so charge your devices and keep the brightness on low to preserve your battery time.
-
Drink Water
Flying is EXTREMELY dehydrating. Grab a bottle of water (or two) before your flight, and resist ordering sugary drinks when refreshments are served. Though you may be craving a pick-me up, your body will thank you later for keeping hydrated.
-
Consider Local Time
I always try to coordinate my in-flight sleep schedule with local time to avoid jet lag. If possible, try acclimating yourself a few days before the flight. If this isn’t possible, simply try to fall asleep (or stay awake) according to local time. That being said, if you are tired, don’t deprive yourself of much-needed sleep.
-
Bring Eye Covers and Earplugs
Eye covers and earplugs, though not exactly cute, will make it much easier to fall asleep. With these two items in your bag, you will be blissfully unaware of crying babies or the movie your neighbor is watching on full brightness next to you. Noise canceling headphones are also great for this, and provide the added bonus of making the sound quality better on any movies you watch or music you bring.
-
Carry on an Extra Outfit
If you have ever lost your bags you know how important it is to have an extra set of clothes with you. Be sure to place this extra set in your carry on bag so that you have two sets of clothing in case your checked luggage is lost.
-
Emergen-C
Planes are practically a breeding ground for illnesses. The combination of a bunch of people, an enclosed space, and travel fatigue make it easy to catch a bug. I usually take Emergen-C a day or two before I fly and for a day or so after so that way I stay healthy.
-
Don’t Forget Toiletries
Contact solution, face wash, toothpaste, makeup…whatever you need to feel fresh and clean should be in your carry on. If these items are liquids, ensure they are the appropriate size, so you don’t have to leave anything behind at security. With all of these essentials in tow, you can freshen up during the flight or after you land.
Do you have any tricks for surviving an international flight?

I find a tablet PC a useful item to have with you in your carry-on. It gives you alternatives if you want something other than the movie they’re playing on board to kill time. That’s especially important if you just can’t sleep on a plane.
Turn brightness levels down, though. It’s easier on your eyes, saves battery life and doesn’t wake up your neighbor.
All best,
Tim (the guy in 37J who is sorry if his display was still too bright 😉 )
