8 Simple Steps to Pack Like a Pro

Suitcase

Today is the day! I’m heading out to Florence in just a few hours, and have packing on the brain. Though packing may seem life the most stressful part of a trip , here are some of my best tips to get your trip off to a good start before you have even reached your destination.

  1. Consider your Itinerary

It is important to consider where you are traveling and what you plan on doing there before you even begin packing. How long will you be gone for? Will it be warm or cold? What activities have you arranged? Once you have answered these questions you will have a better idea of what exactly you need to bring.

  1. Make a Packing List

Write a list of everything you think you need to pack based on your travel itinerary. The simplest way to avoid forgetting anything is to create headings such as “Shirts” “Sweaters/Jackets” “Pants” “Shoes.” I try to make my lists in order of what I wear top to bottom and then include toiletries and extras such as towels or swimsuits. 1. Select a Suitcase

Determine what kind of bag is appropriate for your trip. If your trip is short, a duffel or backpack may work perfectly, however, if you are studying abroad a large checked bag and a carry on are better suited to your needs.

  1. Research Airline Restrictions

If you are traveling by air, make sure to follow any travel restrictions. Often there are extra charges associated with bags heavier than 50 pounds, and only certain size bags are consider carry-ons. Follow any restrictions on liquids, and avoid packing objects that security bans. Looking up these rules in advance will save you time, frustration, and money at the airport.

  1. Roll Clothing

A trick I use to save space is to roll my clothes up as opposed to folding them. This method optimizes suitcase space and also saves tons of time because you don’t have to worry about folding.

  1. Layer Shoes and Breakables

After putting down a first layer of rolled up clothing, I place a layer of shoes (or more delicate objects), then continue packing as if this was the bottom of my suitcase. This ensures that my more delicate objects are safely tucked away and saves space.

  1. Secure All Liquids

Always wrap your liquids in plastic. If you are traveling on a plane carry on liquids will need to be stored in a Ziploc bag, but even in a larger suitcase it is best to place any liquids you have in plastic bags to ensure they do not leak. No one wants to arrive at their destination to find all of their clothing is covered in shampoo.

  1. Don’t Forget Your ID or Tickets

While you will be busy preparing for your trip, be sure to grab your IDs and tickets (and extra copies of each) before you leave the house. These are essential for crossing borders, getting on planes, and making sure you get from A to B, and the extra copies will save you a headache if the originals get lost.

These 8 steps will help make packing stress-free and simple!
