Prague’s John Lennon Wall: More Than Just A Pretty Instagram

Many of us have probably seen the brightly colored and graffiti covered John Lennon Wall tucked away in the heart of Prague on Instagram. I will admit that the wall does make for a lovely backdrop and photo opportunity. However, this piece of living history tells an incredible story of Communism, oppression, and the power of human expression.

The first question that comes to mind when discussing the John Lennon Wall is why exactly a wall in Prague is named after the famed English singer and political activist. Was John Lennon Czech? No. Had he visited Prague? No.

The answer to this question lies in the Czech Republic’s Communist roots. Prior to the end of Communism, the Czech people were living under a totalitarian regime, with harsh laws which severely restricted citizens. Many types of popular music (such as songs produced by John Lennon and the Beatles) that promoted peace, love, freedom, and an end to war, were banned. For the oppressed Czech youth, these banned songs expressed their hopes for the future-an end to communism and a beginning to freedom.

After John Lennon was killed in 1980, an unknown activist painted his image on the wall along with several anti-communism messages, and the John Lennon Wall as we know it was born. Despite the threat of arrest, little by little the wall became covered in messages of love, peace, and images and lyrics that represented John Lennon and his message.

The John Lennon Wall became a symbol of hope, and a colorful reminder that despite the oppressive forces of communism, there were many people in Prague who were willing to face arrest to support this non-violent protest. By choosing to fight back a militaristic force with music lyrics, words, and art, these anonymous protesters lived John Lennon’s words of  spreading peace and love.

So before you take your Instagram or grab a bottle of spray paint to add your own touch to this powerful tradition, remember why the John Lennon Wall is there in the first place and appreciate the true beauty of this monument to human resilience and Prague’s wishes for peace.

What quote would you choose to add to the wall?
