Must Do Madrid: The Top 10 Things To Do In Spain’s Capital

Madrid is the lively, and not to mention grand, capital of Spain. There is much to see and explore in this historic city, and during my quick visit there this summer I tried to take in as many of the sights as I could! To make planning your visit a little easier, I’ve compiled my top 10 things to do in Madrid, from beautiful parks and stately architecture to popular plazas and delectable churros! Enjoy!

1. Feel like a Royal at the Palacio Real

The royal palace of Madrid is a must see when in Spain’s capital. The 18th-century palace is impressive on the outside, but absolutely stunning inside-with over 2,000 rooms decorated from head to toe with frescoes, art, and antiques. Be sure to arrive early to avoid long lines!

2. Indulge at the Mercado San Miguel

Feeling hungry? Satisfy your appetite at the popular San Miguel Market. This historic covered market was originally built in1916. Today, it is considered Madrid’s most popular and famous market. The tapas here are excellent, making this market a great choice for an afternoon snack (or two!).

3. Explore the Plaza Mayor

Plaza Mayor is a massive plaza in the city center of Madrid. The large rectangular square is so big that over the centuries it has played host to many events such as football matches, bullfights, and even public executions! The stunning deep red facades of the buildings surrounding the square add a splash of color to a location with an already colorful past.

4. Escape to Egypt at the Temple of Debod

Who would have thought that you could experience a bit of ancient Egypt in the heart of Madrid? If you love ancient art, history, or the unexpected, be sure to head over to the Temple of Debod, originally erected in 200 BC in Aswan Egypt. The temple was relocated to Madrid in 1968 in order to preserve the precious monument. The temple is also an excellent location to watch the sunset!

5. Admire the Catedral de la Almudena

The Almudena Cathedral is one of the most beautiful I have visited in Europe. This Cathedral is unique due to its incredibly colorful and surprisingly modern neo-gothic style. I couldn’t stop looking up at the beautiful ceiling. You can also take some time to visit the Cathedral’s crypt, the entrance is just around the corner.

6. Take a walk in Retiro Park

I (quite unfortunately) never ended up making it to Retiro Park, but it is an absolute must see and is #1 on my list of things to see if I ever return! The 19th-century park boasts a lake, stunning gardens, charming fountains, and the famous Palacio de Cristal, or “Crystal Palace”. Spend an afternoon enjoying the great outdoors in this idyllic setting.

7. Hit the Prado Museum

Madrid is home to several world-class museums, but if you can only see one, make it the Prado. The Prado is home to a stunning collection featuring Spanish works from the 12th to the 20th century. Marvel at the works of Goya, El Greco, Velázquez, Rubens, and Bosch-to name a few. Art lovers (like myself) won’t want to leave. You’ll want to purchase tickets in advance to avoid a line, as this museum receives over 2 million visitors annually!

8. Check out Puerta del Sol

Puerta del Sol, or “Gate of the Sun”, is another one of Madrid’s busiest plazas. In this square you’ll want to find Point 0, which serves as the beginning point for the 6 National Roads of Spain. You are also likely to run into some costumed characters on this street. As this is a popular tourist location in the center of a busy city, you’ll want to keep an eye out for pickpockets!

9. Stroll along the Gran Via

One of the best ways to explore Madrid is walking along the Gran Via. The Gran Via, or “Great Way” is known for its fantastic shopping and grand architecture. So go ahead and shop ’till you drop!

10. Treat Yourself At Chocolateria San Gines

After a busy day touristing, you’ll want to reward yourself with the best hot chocolate con churros (a popular Spanish treat) in town! The Chocolateria San Gines first opened in 1894, and has been serving delicious churros perfect for dipping in chocolate ever since. This place is so popular that its open 24 hours, 7 days a week! During peak hours you may have to wait, but let me assure you its worth it!

These 10 must-dos in Madrid should get your trip off to a great start! Do you have any suggestions for a visit to Madrid? Be sure to comment if you do!
