Living Local In Slovenia: What To Do And See In Bela Krajina
During my latest trip to Slovenia, I had the pleasure of staying at Big Berry luxury “glamping” camp in the Bela Krajina region of Slovenia (read all about it here). During my visit, the staff at Big Berry helped plan an incredible itinerary of things to do and see that let me explore Slovenia like a local. One of Big Berry’s goals is to support local businesses and share with visitors from around the world the beauty of the Slovenian countryside. Instead of rushing from place to place, trying to fit every tourist site in, I found myself meeting locals, learning about Slovenia’s culture, and getting a feel for Slovenian daily life. It was refreshing trying out a different style of travel, and I can’t wait to share my experiences here with you!
Local Cuisine
Each day at the camp, a basket was delivered straight to my porch filled with locally produced goodies such as fresh milk and yogurt, grains, fruits, breads, juice, eggs, honey, and more.
Each day, the items in the basket rotated and I got to taste a bit more of the local fresh goods. Not only was everything I ate incredibly delicious, but also incredibly fresh. Some of my favorites were the fresh milk and yogurt, and later I was even able to visit the dairy farm where these fresh products were made.
In a world where much of our food is brought to us from thousands of miles away and purchased at a corporate-owned supermarket, it was refreshing to know where everything I was consuming came from.
Local Producers
During my visit, Big Berry organized several trips to meet with local producers in the region. This was perfect for me as I was traveling solo (and without a car). I was lucky enough to spend much of my time touring Bela Krajina with fellow bloggers Heather and Pete of Conversant Traveller, and we all enjoyed the itinerary Big Berry had in store for us and the opportunities to learn more about the local culture and the region from locals to the area!
Baking Pogača
One of my favorite things I did during my stay was learn how to make the traditional salted bread at Bibi Turizem.
I absolutely love baking, so it was fun learning the steps involved in bread making, and getting my hands (and self) covered in flour during the process. Our host was incredibly welcoming, showing us around her boutique in between the baking time and letting us sample some delicious lavender juice, which I absolutely loved.
If you find yourself in Bela Krajina, I highly recommend peeking into her shop filled with local arts and crafts, or trying your hand at bread making yourself!
Berryshka Chocolate and Liqueur Tasting
Another delicious stop we made was to the local Berryshka Chocolate and Liqueur producers. Not only did we get a chance to see the old spring fed mill located on the property, but witness the production of chocolate, essential oils, and gin.
The smell of juniper berries was in the air, and it was fascinating learning about the distillation process.
Afterwards, we sampled yummy chocolates as well as the gin. It was unique being able to see all of the steps of production, from start to final product in one place!
Malnarič Wine Tasting
One of the thing that surprised me most about Slovenia was the amount of vineyards there! After passing several, I knew I simply had to try some Slovenian vino! We stopped at the beautiful Malnarič winery and did just that. I sampled a red wine, white wine, and a moscato from the region, all of which were light, refreshing, and delicious.
It turns out its not just the Italians and French who make great wine!
Local Nature
One of the best parts of staying in the Bela Krajina region is the abundance of incredible natural sights within the area. Here are a few of my favorites from my visit!
Krupa River
One area we stopped at was the mouth of the Krupa River. The water is an enchanting green color due to the unique mix of minerals and limestone rock features nearby.
Kolpa River
Big Berry is situated along the Kolpa river, and I had several opportunities to explore the river by canoe and as it flowed through other parts of the region. The water is beautiful and so clear!
Mirna Gora
Meaning “mild mountain,” Mirna Gora is the perfect place for a hike. Hike up the trails past the birch trees the Bela Krajina region is known for for incredible views. At the top of the mountain there sits an old church one can even climb up for a panaorama of the region.
Afterwards, reward yourself with a yummy bite of blueberry strudel in the hostel at the top!
Local History
Rozanec Roman Ruins
It seems I can escape Italy, but not the Romans! One of my favorite historic sights was the Rozanec Roman Ruins, an old quarry and worshipping grounds used in roman times as well as the 3rd century by inhabitants of the region. A very picturesque spot filled with huge boulders covered in lichen and ancient carvings.
Bela Krajina Museum Metlika
The Bela Krajina Museum Metlika is housed in an old castle and consists of a collection of artifacts from prehistoric times to modern day. A stop here is not only a great way to see a Slovenian castle, but also to learn about the region’s local history.
Kambič Gallery of Metlika
Just a short walk away from the museum lies the Kambič Gallery of Metlika. Though small, the gallery houses an array of paintings, sculptures, and other art works created by Slovenian artists. The perfect way to experience a taste of local art and artists from the region and learn about the museum’s collectors unique history.
Tre Fare
Tre Fare, or three churches is a local mystery! At this site, there are 3 churches encircled by a wall in one location. No one knows why the three churches are built, so its a bit of a local mystery! A top here is perfect for a unique look at some of the churches the dot the Slovenian countryside.
WWII Plane Memorial
Just a short bike ride or walk from Big Berry lies an old WWII plane. Surrounded by tranquil wheat and corn fields, this memorial is a testament to the impact that WWII had on even the most peaceful European towns.
There you have it! Some of the best things to do and see in Slovenia’s Bela Krajina region! Special thanks to Big Berry for showing me these local gems. Which are on your must see list? Comment below!
