Capri For A Day: Top 10 Things To Do

A trip to Italy’s Amalfi Coast is not complete without at least one day spent on the beautiful Mediterranean island known as the Isola di Capri. Once a favorite spot to Roman emperors Augustus and Tiberius, Capri has continued its tradition of attracting the rich and famous, with celebrity visitors ranging from Liz Taylor and Jackie Kennedy Onassis to Mariah Carey and Leonardo DiCaprio. With its gorgeous blue waters, charming shop-lined walkways, and beautiful blooms, its not hard to see why Capri has remained a favorite getaway since Roman times. Check out my top things to do on this incredible isle!

1. See Capri By Boat

Capri Boat.

There are a variety of different ways to boat around the entire island of Capri. For those who don’t have the money or time to sail or rent a private boat, I recommend taking a group tour around the island for around 20 Euro!  These tours include some basic information about the island, take around 2 hours, and hit all the major sights.

2. Go inside the Blue Grotto

Blue Grotto. Capri, Italy.

If you decide to boat around the island, a stop at the Blue Grotto is a must. The Blue Grotto is rumored to have been swam in by emperor Tiberius himself, and is today known for the bright blue water that awaits visitors inside. However, this activity is weather dependent. Assuming that water level is not too high on the day you visit, for 13 euro you and 3-4 people can squeeze into a boat and enter this enchanting place. After a tight squeeze (you’ll have to lay completely flat in the boat) you will be able to enter the Grotto for a few minutes. Enjoy it while you can, as the visit is brief!

3. Or the Green grotto

If the water level is too high for you to enter the Blue Grotto, the Green Grotto is another beautiful highlight of many Capri Boat tours. Here you can see the way the rocks appear to be green due to minerals and the reflection of the water.

4. Shop ’til you drop in Marina Grande

Shop. Capri. Italy.

Capri is famous for its shopping! Spend some time meandering around town-you are sure to find a unique souvenir or two for friends and family back home.

5. Take the Funicular to Capri Town

Funicular. Capri. Amalfi Coast.

For 1.80 Euro you can skip the stairs and take a Funicular straight to Capri Town from Marina Grande. Marina Grande is where busses leading to Anacapri and Marina Piccola are found, as well as shopping and other attractions.

6. Enjoy the views (and blooms!) in the Garden of Augustus

Garden of Augustus. Capri, Italy.

The Garden of Augustus has one of the most incredible views available on Capri, and it only costs 1 Euro to visit! The garden is small but charming, with a variety of gorgeous flowers which truly pop against the blue of the water. A half hour here is a perfect way to spend part of your day in Capri.

7. Hit the beach in Marina Piccola

Capri. Marina Piccola. Amalfi, Italy.

Marina Piccola is one of my favorite beaches in all of Italy. A small beach, its crystal clear waters and rocks perfect for jumping off of make it a great location to enjoy a day at the beach during the summer months.

8. Hop on a bus and explore Anacapri

Anacapri. Italy.

Anacapri is another town in Capri that is certainly worth a visit. If you don’t plan on spending the day at the beach, or plan on exploring more than Capri Town, a 1.80 Euro bus ticket and a short ride will take you there.

9. Take the chairlift from Anacapri to Monte Solaro

Anacapri chairlift. Amalfi Coast, Italy.

For a fun ride and incredible views, take the chairlift from Anacapri to Monte Solaro. Though it is a little pricey (11 Euro!), the views are worth it.

10. Sip on a Granita

Granitas, Capri, Amalfi Coast, Italy.

A granita is a fresh lemon or orange ice slushy popular in Italy. They usually cost around 3-5 Euro and are a delicious way to cool off on a hot day!
