10 New Year’s Resolutions For The Adventurous Spirit In 2016

Are you looking to add some adventure to your life in 2016? What better time to make travel a priority than New Year’s? Whether you have already booked your adventure of a lifetime, or are still simply dreaming yours up, these 10 New Year’s Resolutions are sure to keep your travel dreams on track, and fill your year with inspiration and wanderlust!

1.Plan a big trip

Hiking the mountains of Patagonia? Sleeping under the stars in the Australian Outback? Hitting the beaches of the Caribbean? Camping in Yellowstone National Park? Start making plans for the trip of a lifetime. If you can’t quite afford something at the moment, try planning a trip closer to home, or save a little money each week so you can embark on your adventure next year!

2. Give something up

Do you really need to get a latte from Starbucks 5 times a week? What about your monthly manicure? Maybe instead of paying $12 at the theater, you can start renting movies and watching them at home. Identify one little luxury in your life and cut it out. Use the money you saved to fund your next trip. I guarantee you that you’ll enjoy your coffee more when you are sipping it in Italy than you ever did at Starbucks.

3. Be a tourist (in your own city)

Chicago, Illinois.

I only live one hour away from Chicago! I love taking time to do something new or touristy whenever I am home.

You don’t always have to wander far from home or spend a lot of money to discover something new. Grab a friend and make a day of it. Visit that museum you’ve never been to before, or the new restaurant you are dying to try, even a visit to the cheesy local tourist attraction you went to on that one field trip in middle school could lead to unexpected fun.

4. Learn a language

Whether you are taking that dream trip to Paris this year or not doesn’t mean you can’t start getting prepared. Take some time in 2016 to learn a new language. Free apps like Duolingo make this easy to do each day. When the time comes for your trip of a lifetime, you’ll be ready to sound like a local (or at least say good morning)!

5. Write a bucket list

Creating a bucket list will help you identify all of the places you are hoping to see before you die, and will also help you set some travel goals for the future. What better way to organize your future plans?

6. Get inspired

Read a novel that takes place in your dream destination, watch every movie you can find that was filmed in Spain, or purchase a set of guide books and highlight away! Learning a little more about an upcoming trip or plans for the future will only help you get more excited, and make the experience even more meaningful to you.

7. Become a host

If meeting new people is your thing, join the Couchsurfing community and host fellow travelers in your spare room, couch, etc. You never know, you may meet some friends that are more than happy to host you in their home, be it near or far or learn some helpful tips about new places to visit.

8. Record your memories

Photos

Even something as simple as Instagram can be a great way to archive your best photos!

Do you ever take a trip only to return home with a memory card of photos you never touch? Have you ever wished you kept a travel journal so you could remember the name of that incredible restaurant you went to? This year, no excuses. Make recording your travel memories a priority. Pack a journal, bring a camera, or make those long overdue photo books from past trips that you’ve been neglecting.

9. DIY it

Take on a wanderlust worthy DIY project to remind you of your travel goals. Pinterest is full of great ideas and step-by-step tutorials to help you create the perfect piece of inspiration. Place it somewhere you are sure to see it every day, such as your home or office to keep your plans on track.

10. Put yourself out there

Getting to know new people from all over the world is one of the best parts of traveling. Whether you are able to head somewhere exotic or can only stay local in 2016, putting yourself out there and meeting new people is sure to feed your adventurous spirit, and may even yield some new friends worth visiting!

What New Year’s resolution will help you reach your travel goals?

Intersting ideas, especially the first one should be on everyones list. A big trip doesn’t have to include going far away, just a bit further than the usual trips go. 🙂

    Jesper,

I completely agree. Sometimes the best adventures happen right in your backyard!
