10 Things To Do In Ljubljana, Slovenia (Plus Day Trips!)
I’ve been obsessed with Slovenia since my first visit to Ljubljana (just a day!) a few months ago, and fell even more in love with this stunning country when I returned and had the opportunity to experience Slovenia’s enchanting countryside. For those looking to find a charming European escape, Slovenia is an idyllic location. When visiting, be sure to hit Ljubljana, Slovenia’s capital city. Not only is the city a great place to explore, but is in an ideal location for visiting some of the country’s famous landmarks, such as Lake Bled. Here are my top 10 things to do when you visit Ljubljana:
1. Explore Ljubljana’s Riverfront
Ljubljana is famous for its scenic riverfront and the “Triple Bridge.” In this part of the city center, visitors can see a group of three bridges which connect the city’s medieval banks with modern Ljubljana. Spend some time admiring the views and visiting the restaurants, cafes, and shops that line the river.
2. Visit Ljubljana Castle
Perched high above the city lies Ljubljana Castle. This structure was originally created in the 11th century, but the existing castle is primarily from a 15th century renovation. Visitors to the castle and now museum can see small exhibitions relating to Slovenian history, explore the castle grounds, and climb the tower for a panoramic view of the city.
3. Go to Prison
Slovenia happens to be the home of one of the most unique hostels I have ever stayed in, Hostel Celica. This centrally-located modern day hostel originally served as a prison for over 100 years. Now, guests have the opportunity to stay in the former prison. Each room is uniquely decorated by a local artist, and guests can stay in rooms made for two or the mixed dorm-style budget rooms upstairs. I’ve stayed here 2 times now and couldn’t recommend it more! Read about my experience here.
4. Check out the Street Art
Even if you aren’t staying in Hostel Celica, its worth a visit as it is next to Ljubljana’s alternative art community Metelkova. Spend an hour walking around this unique and colorful complex, filled with street art and sculptures from local artists. The history is fascinating and array of artistic expression is sure to capture your attention.
5. Take A Day Trip To Lake Bled
Lake Bled, one of Slovenia’s most famous natural wonders is just a 45 minute drive from Ljubljana, and the bus ride is around 1.5 hours, making it a perfect day trip! Bike around the lake, boat to Bled Island, explore Bled Castle, or participate in a variety of adventure activities offered there.
I only had the opportunity to stay for the day, but Lake Bled would also be a perfect place to spend a weekend!
6. Hike Vintgar Gorge
On my day trip to Bled I decided to head to Vintgar Gorge, a short 25 minute drive away. (If you have a car this is simple, you can also arrange transfers running about every hour in Bled.) This was totally worth the trip. I was able to follow along the steep gorge on footpaths and wooden walkways before ending my trek at Šum waterfall, Slovenia’s highest. The scenery is stunning and nature lovers will love this opportunity to hike.
7. Try The Ljubljana Pub Crawl
Young travelers will be delighted to know that Ljubljana has a pretty rocking pub crawl. I went the first time with the group I was traveling with, but I’ve heard of solo travelers who had a great time and met a lot of fellow travelers. If you are looking to have fun, meet new people, and visit an eclectic array of pubs, its not to be missed!
8. Visit Postojna Caves and Castle
One of my favorite things about Slovenia was how easy it is to get places! A 1 hour bus ride from Ljubljana will drop you off at near Slovenia’s incredible 24 Km Postojna Cave. This was one of my favorite parts of the trip. Visitors can wander 5Km of this stunning cave network 2 million years in the making. Read all about visiting here!
9. Check out Slovenia’s Stunning Countryside
On my first visit to Slovenia, I missed out on the country’s gorgeous and expansive countryside. If you find yourself in Ljubliana for more than a couple days, consider a trip out to the countryside. I had a fantastic time glamping in the Bela Krajina region of Slovenia. Check out this post for information on all the things there are to do, from wine tasting, to hiking, to learning how to bake traditional Slovenian bread!
10. Explore
Ljubljana is a beautiful city filled with culture, art museums, parks, lovely architecture, and more. I certainly wasn’t able to see it all in a weekend, and would love to return and explore! Be sure to let me know what your favorite things to do are for when I (hopefully!) make it back, just comment below!
