One of my early attempts at speaking German was more harmless, though I suppose it could have gone badly, if a German-speaking friend hadn't been around to enlighten me.

I had a simple task. Bring money to the cash register and ask for change to use in the Eduscho coffee machine in the store. I was given the phrase, "Können Sie bitte das wechseln," but somehow I managed to say "küssen" (kiss) instead of "das wechseln" (change). Seems I wasn't asking for a kiss, though, just if the cashier knew how to kiss. Needless to say, I was embarrassed, and I can't even remember if the cashier was a woman or man.

Those were early days, and I was green.

Istanbul was not my favorite, but it was a good visit. I enjoyed myself, but I do not have photos that I know of. So seeing yours was nice

Sorry to disappoint you about their vampiric nature, the fact is that we can always tell the tourists in Europe. I live in Spain and as soon as an American is within sight we automatically know. It's much more than the language or accent. Tourists (particularly Americans and Brits) walk differently, act differently, dress differently, have different jewelry, different ways of interacting with each other, the locals and the exhibits. Really you were probably screaming American even though you weren't aware of it.

Your site is very informative and I love the pictures. I am going to Italy in January for 3 weeks. I'm trying to anticipate what kind of clothing to take. Do you have any tips?
